DEFINITION AND SHORT DESCRIPTION
VERB TO GET
The verb to get is used to
describe different expressions, has many meanings and is sometimes confusing.
We will know some of its meanings:
- Acquire, receive, take something (This is the most common meaning of the verb to get)
- Become, change into a different state
- Arrive or reach a destination
- Bring back or hand something to someone else
- Go through a mental or physical experience.
- Contract an illness or disease.
The verb to get is also used
in idiomatic sentences which have a particular meaning and should be
interpreted, taking into account the combination of words, what you want to
express and the use of language. Some combinations and their meaning are the
following:
- Get used to: Get used to a new place or situation.
- Get along With: maintain a good relationship with someone.
- To get time off: have a space to perform a deferential action.
There are rules without
exceptions and one of these is "if after using a preposition a verb is
used it should be a gerund, it is impossible to use any other verbal form"
for example:
- He is happy of (Preposition) going (Gerund: Verb + ing) to the party this saturday
- She is good at (Preposition) acting and singing (Gerund: Verb + ing)
- I keep fit by (preposition) working (Gerund: Verb + ing) out every day
